Chiropractor, clinic owner and firm believer that healthcare should make sense

Stuart Rudd is the founder of Derby Family Chiropractic and has been helping people move, feel and function better for more than 20 years.

Before becoming a chiropractor, Stuart obtained a engineering degree and worked as an engineer at Honda in Swindon. That engineering background still influences how he approaches the human body today: asking questions, looking for patterns and trying to understand why something is not working as well as it should.

However, his interest in health is also deeply personal.

Stuart first started seeing a chiropractor at High Field Chiropractic around 1984, and the experience clearly sparked an interest.

Years later, he developed persistent pain following a road traffic accident. Despite undergoing more than 50 NHS and private physiotherapy sessions, followed by an expensive spinal injection, the pain continued. It was only after receiving chiropractic care that Stuart finally began to improve.

That experience sealed the deal, and Stuart decided to retrain as a chiropractor.

It also helped him appreciate just how frustrating it can be when pain continues, answers are unclear and different professionals seem to offer conflicting advice.

Those experiences helped shape the kind of chiropractor he wanted to become.

Experience backed by continued learning

Stuart holds a Doctor of Chiropractic qualification and a Master’s Degree in Chronic Pain Management.

Although he has spent more than two decades working with patients, he remains slightly obsessed with learning. His postgraduate training has covered areas including:

  • Chronic pain and headache management

  • Spinal and extremity adjusting

  • The relationship between the nervous system, movement and pain

  • Rehabilitation and exercise

  • Cranial Facial Release

  • Shockwave therapy

  • Posture and movement assessment

Stuart combines this experience with a practical approach. He believes patients should understand what may be contributing to their problem, what their options are and what they can do to help themselves.

You will rarely hear him say that one adjustment will magically fix everything.

Stuart’s approach to chiropractic care

Stuart does not simply focus on the area that hurts.

Pain is important, but it does not always tell us the whole story. The painful area may be influenced by movement, previous injuries, lifestyle, sleep, stress or changes elsewhere in the body.

That is why care at Derby Family Chiropractic begins with a detailed consultation and examination. Where appropriate, this may include posture or muscle-activity scans, movement testing and neurological or orthopaedic assessments.

The aim is to build a clearer picture before recommending a plan of care.

Stuart uses a range of approaches, including traditional chiropractic adjustments, gentler techniques, soft-tissue work, rehabilitation advice and other therapies where suitable.

Most importantly, he believes care should be adapted to the individual—not the other way around.

More than just getting people out of pain

Getting somebody more comfortable is important, but Stuart’s wider goal is to help people regain confidence in their body.

That might mean:

  • Sleeping more comfortably

  • Returning to work

  • Playing with the grandchildren

  • Getting back on a motorcycle

  • Exercising without constantly worrying about an old injury

  • Understanding what their body needs to remain active

Stuart is particularly interested in helping people with persistent or recurring problems who feel they have already “tried everything.”

He will always be honest about whether chiropractic care may be appropriate. If he believes another healthcare professional or further investigation is needed, he will explain why and refer accordingly.

About Derby Family Chiropractic

Stuart founded Derby Family Chiropractic to create the kind of clinic he would want to visit himself: welcoming, professional, evidence-informed and never intimidating.

The clinic has now served the Derby community for more than 19 years and has grown into a multidisciplinary team of chiropractors, sports therapists and support staff.

Derby Family Chiropractic has also held the Royal College of Chiropractors’ Patient Partnership Quality Mark since 2012, recognising the clinic’s commitment to meeting patients’ needs and involving them in their care.

Away from the clinic

Outside work, Stuart is a dad, dog owner and motorcycle enthusiast.

He enjoys reading health research, experimenting with ways to improve his own health and then writing about what he discovers—usually with a mixture of science, personal experience and the occasional terrible joke.

Despite holding a Doctor of Chiropractic qualification, a Master’s degree and completing countless postgraduate courses, Stuart remains cheerfully incapable of producing legible handwriting.

Thankfully, his adjustments are considerably more accurate than his spelling.

Would you like to find out whether we can help?

If pain, stiffness or a recurring problem is preventing you from doing the things you enjoy, the first step is a consultation.

We will listen to what has been happening, carry out an appropriate examination and explain our findings clearly. If we believe we can help, we will discuss your options with you. If we do not think chiropractic care is suitable, we will tell you.
